FAQ

We love our Fencing culture, but we know it can be confusing at times. Please look through our Frequently asked questions and let us know if you need any other Fencing information. We are happy to help.

Are fencing shoes necessary for fencing?

Fencing requires what a normal shoe isn't built for: explosive lunges, sudden braking, constant direction shifts. The 15/14 and Master address each demand.Torsional support that locks your foot through lateral movement. Shock absorption distributed to protect your ankle and Achilles from repeated impact, rather than concentrated at one point. Reliable grip on metallic, wooden, and synthetic pistes that lets you brake and accelerate without slipping. Reinforced construction around your heel and ankle that stabilizes you through lunge and recovery. The shoe absorbs the forces. Your joints stay protected.

Have you tried fencing shoes during a game?

Our founder Azza Besbes is a 3× Olympian and 3× World medalist with 20+ years on the piste, who fenced on the professional circuit and used 50+ pairs, fencing-specific and regular athletic footwear alike. She confirms that dedicated fencing shoes are necessary to maintain grip on the strip and stay stable through direction changes. The Azza shoes are designed directly from that experience, so whether you're starting out or competing, you can move with confidence on the strip.

Are fencing shoes different from other shoes? What is special about them?

Azza's shoes are athlete-designed for fencers' specific needs: security, performance, light weight, and agility.
- The A-NYLTECH shank in the 15/14 delivers torsional rigidity through lateral movement. The Master's X-Carb carbon plate does the same, with added lightweight precision.
- Reinforced sidewalls in both models stop your foot rolling outward.
- A circular-contour outsole tuned for start/stop/brake traction on metallic, wooden, and synthetic pistes, with durable high-wear zones for piste-drag protection.
- An extended, ergonomic heel-counter wrap and TPU toe cap distribute lunge and braking impact and protect the toe.

- Intertek certified cushion absorption sole to protect athletes from the impact of repeated lunges and sudden stops.
- The Master adds NeoHeel+ midsole for lightweight resilience and the Heel Adaptive System™, letting you adjust support to your foot rather than the other way around.

Can you play badminton or squash in fencing shoes?

We think shoes are engineered to provide the right combination of traction, support, cushioning, and durability for the movements and demands of each sport. But we can tell that fencing has
common features with badminton and squash with lateral footwork, high jumps and lunges.

Just as fencing shoes, badminton footwear is lightweight and flexible, emphasizing maneuverability
to aid in swift court coverage and dynamic movements. They also provide good ankle support to prevent injuries during the frequent lateral movements and jumps required in the sport. The sole
pattern is crafted to provide grip and enable rapid lateral movements on badminton court’s wooden or synthetic surface.

15/14 vs Master: Which Azza Fencing Shoe Fits Your Style?

15/14: Stability & Protection
Engineered for fencers who demand control, the Azza 15/14 delivers a structured, supportive fit built for confidence on the piste. Its reinforced ankle padding and reassuring cushioning absorb the repeated impact of lunges and recoveries, protecting your joints through the longest training sessions and most demanding competitions. Paired with a proven outsole geometry tuned for grip and lateral stability, the 15/14 is the reference fencing shoe for athletes who prioritize safety, endurance, and long-term comfort. Stability is not a compromise; it is a competitive advantage.

Master: Speed & Reactivity
Built for explosive fencers, the Azza Master strips away everything that slows you down. A lighter construction and a closer-to-ground sensation translate every movement into faster transitions and sharper footwork, the responsiveness prized by explosive, attack-minded fencers . At its core sits our patented Adaptive Heel System, a modular technology that lets you swap the heel pad (Soft, Medium, Hard) to fine-tune rebound and cushioning to your profile. Same trusted outsole platform, radically different feel: the Master is the performance fencing shoe engineered for speed, precision, and reactivity.

What is the Adaptive Heel System?

It's a feature unique to the Azza Master: three swappable heel pads: Soft, Medium and Hard. That change how the heel rebounds. Choose Soft for comfort and stability, Hard for an explosive, reactive feel, or Medium in between, so the same shoe adapts to your fencing style and the demands of a given session.
