4 Reasons Why Fencing Is One of the Most Challenging Sports

Fencing is an extremely challenging sport, both mentally and physically. Hopefully, after you read this article you will have a better understanding of the challenges high level fencers persevere through to represent their countries on the piste.

It is hard to establish a good team/club environment.

Yes, Fencing is mostly an individual sport. However, fencing at a high level requires sparring partners that are willing to encourage you and train with you constantly and consistently. This becomes difficult when your teammates will also be your opponents at competitions and feelings of jealousy may arise. In addition, fencers will have disagreements about coaching decisions that benefited another fencer over another. While having a strong club/team is important, strength can only be created when fencers work together to help everyone around them succeed alongside themselves.

Traveling for tournaments is tiring.

Traveling for tournaments is incredibly tiring due to its frequency and distance. Often, fencers travel across the world to compete at an international level tournament while also keeping up with their responsibilities at home whether that is work or school. In addition, it is very expensive and not every country funds their entire team’s travel expenses. Many fencers have to find other ways to fund their travel which can be very stressful. Also, many fencers have to attend tournaments in their home countries and abroad in order to maintain their position on the national team and try to qualify for the Olympics. In addition, it is exhausting leaving a tournament and arriving home and immediately having to start work or school again despite jet lag and exhaustion created by the travel itself and fencing.

It is difficult to be consistent.

It is also very difficult to be a consistent fencer due to the individual nature of the sport. In addition, you must constantly change and adapt to specific techniques and strategies depending on your opponent and objective. It is also very hard to consistently train when challenges at school or work arise despite having to leave for tournaments often. However, consistently training is a requirement at these top tournaments where the best of the best are striving for Gold as well.

It is difficult finding a coach that fits your skill level and style.

It is also difficult to find a coach that fits your personal fencing style along with your skill level that has enough time to dedicate themselves to helping you grow as a person and fencer while achieving your dreams. It should also be noted that it is difficult to find a coach that is also near your school and work that meets all of these other necessary requirements. Many fencers have to move far away from home or even to another country to get appropriate training and support. This can cause homesickness and trouble adjusting to a new language, culture, and routine.
